Treat September like December
September arrives in full force, and with it the usual conversation: back to work, that "new year" feeling, setting goals for the rest of the year. The problem is that most of these resolutions never leave the page.
It's the same story every year. September carries an energy of its own, almost stronger than January's. Calendars fill up with planning meetings, teams come back full of ideas, and there's always someone proposing "let's finally get this done by December." It's a good impulse. The problem isn't the ambition, it's what comes next.
It reminds me of all the times I'd say yes to an invitation before asking my mother if I could actually go, and the answer would be a flat no. Say yes first, sort out the details later. It never worked out.
Applied to today's context, it reminds me of all those companies that, rushing in headfirst, are the first to want to implement artificial intelligence in their business, but forget to ask the mother if they actually can. And no, the mother here isn't the boss, it's the processes already running inside the company.
Buying an AI tool is the easy part. The hard part is having organized data, clear workflows, and people ready to use that tool every day. Without that, AI just gets glued on top of the existing chaos instead of fixing it.
This isn't an exaggeration. A 2025 report from MIT's NANDA initiative found that most enterprise generative AI pilots deliver no measurable impact on results, with only about 5% achieving real revenue acceleration. The cause wasn't the quality of the models, it was the habit of bolting AI onto legacy processes without preparing the ground first.
In other words: most companies are saying yes to the invitation before asking their mother.
Maybe the right question for this September isn't "what are we implementing by December," but "what do we need to sort out before implementing anything." Let's treat this period as the end of the year, the preparation for the next one, to finally pull out the plans written down in 2026's resolutions and put them into practice in 2027, this time with the house in order.
